Tremendous nostalgia is created when matching wine to food, which also goes hand-in-hand with the weather, your mood, your company and the time of day. There are a million different ways to enjoy wine, even on its own! But there is no arguing that everything tastes better when your senses are alive.
Harmonious matches or stark contrasts are the keys to memorable wine adventures – there are no rules, here are some suggestions to get you started.
A crisp citrus and mineral style of Riesling that will work harmoniously with freshly shucked oysters, sashimi or fresh seared scallops with a lemon butter sauce. It is also super for slightly heavier flavours such as smoked salmon or chicken or try it with tempura battered Zucchini flowers stuffed with goats cheese (vegetarian option).
The classic food match with a sturdy Barossa Valley Shiraz is a flame grilled fillet of beef accompanied with a red wine jus, but also goes great with a hearty lamb stew, wood-fired pizza or a char-grilled vegetable paella with Mediterranean spices (vegetarian option).
This fortified wine goes with anything chocolate. It is fantastic with dark chocolate; where the bittersweet cocoa sets off the flavours in the Tokay, but if you prefer a contrasting savoury option, try it with a strong blue cheese.
